Connecting the Classroom to the Groove at ISTELive: The Influence of R&B on Modern-Day Teaching and Learning
by William Jeffery

I'm not simply thinking about the latest educational practices and technologies as we prepare for ISTELive 23 in Philadelphia. I'm also paying attention to the city's rich cultural history, particularly its seminal contributions to Rhythm and Blues (R&B). The impact of Philadelphia music, notably the Philly Soul movement, has echoed throughout history and may be felt in today's modern schools. Fresh off the heels of Juneteenth, I am stoked to explore Philly's Roots in my culture and educational journey.

A Symphony in the City of Brotherly Love: The Philly Sound

Philadelphia is more than just the location of ISTELive 23. It's also the cradle of the Philadelphia Sound, or Philly Soul, a distinct form of R&B. This genre emerged within the famed Sigma Sound Studios, with its smooth, polished, and expressive style. The studio, founded in 1968 by Joseph Tarsia, became a meeting place for music giants such as Aretha Franklin, David Bowie, and Luther Vandross, creating a sound that influenced R&B for generations to come.

Echoes of the Past: Philly Soul's Influence on Modern R&B

The Philly Soul sound did not fade away with the passage of time. Instead, it resurfaced in the works of contemporary musicians, influencing the evolution of contemporary R&B. The Philly Sound's deep, layered melodies and powerful, passionate vocals have been carried forward by performers such as Daryl Hall and John Oates, The Roots, Vivian Green, Jill Scott, and Musiq Soulchild, among others. Sigma Sound Studios' influence extended beyond Philadelphia, with performers such as Luther Vandross recording there, indicating the studio's broad impact on the R&B genre.

ISTELive 23: The Rhythm of Learning

So, what is the significance of this musical trip for ISTELive 23 attendees? It all comes down to building connections. Music, particularly R&B, can provide a meaningful backdrop for learning due to its storytelling and emotional relevance.

Educators can encourage students to evaluate lyrics, investigate historical and cultural themes, or delve into the science of sound by selecting songs from our Philly Soul-inspired collection. With educational technology tools this can be quickly incorporated into various state standards. An interdisciplinary approach to learning not only makes it more engaging, but it also promotes a deeper comprehension of the content.

ISTELive 23 is about more than just discovering new educational tools and strategies. It's also about knowing how to engage with them on a more personal basis. R&B's emotional nature can be used to promote social-emotional learning by inspiring conversations on empathy, self-expression, and cultural appreciation. Collaborative initiatives, such as group concerts or songwriting assignments, can help to improve teamwork and communication skills even further.

I'm enthused about the potential of music, particularly Philly Soul, to boost modern teaching and learning as we prepare for ISTELive 23 in Philadelphia. Education can become a more interesting, inclusive, and dynamic experience by bringing features of this influential genre into the classroom. So let's strike a chord in education at ISTELive 23, where the rhythm of learning and the soul of Philadelphia collide.
